Sea Surface Temperature Charts to Find More Fish

Pelagic species including Tuna, Marlin, Sailfish, Wahoo, and Mahi, can be found in various ranges of water temperatures, gravitating to temperature breaks where bodies of cooler water meet warmer water which creates conditions of upwelling to start the marine food chain. Studying Sea Surface Temperatures (SST) near Southern California before heading offshore gives any serious angler the deciding upper hand.

FishTrack’s Cloudfree SST imagery - produced using data from collective satellite SST sources and aided by computer modeling to fill in areas blocked by cloud cover - offers the ultimate tool to help offshore anglers pinpoint and precisely locate desirable temperature breaks offshore. Concentrations of bait and gamefish will often occur where temperature and chlorophyll breaks are found in proximity to submarine contour changes around ledges, banks, canyons and seamounts.

With FishTrack’s ability to overlay corresponding altimetry (sea surface height anomalies), bathymetry, ocean current imagery, and local hot spots on top of any SST or Chlorophyll layer, successfully targeting fish offshore has never been easier.

Southern California Offshore Fishing Hot Spots

SoCal’s west coast is lined with deep sections of water off of San Diego, Point Loma and Marina del Rey. The Pacific Coast is defined by cooler waters than the Atlantic and a steep drop right off the coastline that dips down to 300 to 500 feet only a few miles off, then dramatically drops down into 3000 to 6000 feet. Summer months bring warming waters which sparks the pelagic bite. Hot spots include 289 Fathom Spot, West Butterfly, San Juan Seamount, Boomerang and Tanner Bank.

Southern California Ideal Fishing Seasons

Locations of various fish species are affected by water temperatures, time of year and availability of food. Sea surface temperature (SST) plays on integral role for targeting species in their respective seasons. For Southern California these are the best months to target these species:

  • Bluefin Tuna – June to October
  • Yellowfin Tuna  – July to October
  • Wahoo – July to September
  • Bluefin tuna – March to November
  • Albacore – April to November
  • Dorado – April through September
"FishTrack SST and Marine Forecast are the first two things I look at in the morning. Cloudfree satellite water temperature and an accurate reading of the winds and current decide how I'll spend my day."
