California Yellowtail World Record on Fly Approved!
While fly fishing off Mexico’s Guadelupe Island, California angler Paul Chukar Tutunjian caught this 17.9 kg (39 lb 8 oz) California yellowtail (Seriola lalandi) on September 9, 2016 that has earned him a new world record. Tutunjian was fishing aboard the Hana Pau, captained by fellow record holder Tom Pfleger, and needed an hour to subdue the hard fighting yellowtail after it took the mackerel pattern fly he was casting. Tutunjian’s new men’s 8 kg (16 lb) tippet class record ousted the previous record of 15.82 kg (34 lb 4 oz).
