The Naira team scored a grand slam on the third and final day to win the 2017 Presidential Aruba Caribbean Cup in grand style. The team released two blue marlin, four white marlin and one sailfish, good for 2,000 points, in the three days of tournament competition. It’s also the third year in a row they have won the tournament. Naira is a 57-foot Paul Mann home-ported in Aruba and owned by Ruben “Bincho” Mansur. Yilson Iriarte from Naira also won the tournament’s top angler trophy and prizes with 900 points.

Finishing in second place is Eric Mansur’s Alina team. They tallied 1,700 points from three blue marlin, one white marlin and five sailfish in the tournament. Alina is a 58-foot Paul Mann home-ported at Marina Varadero in Aruba, the host location for the Presidential Caribbean Cup tournament. The team fishing aboard Tara finished in third place with 1,500 points. Tara is captained by Alex Mansur. Billfishing in Aruba is a true family sport!

In the angler standings Iriarte was followed by Kanmar Kleinmodig from the Just Us team with 900 points, finishing in second place. Third went to Christian Mansur on Alina with 800 points.

Despite high winds and rough seas, the fleet of 19 participating vessels released a total of 64 billfish: 17 blue marlin, 23 white marlin and 24 sailfish, all on 30-pound-test line and non-offset circle hooks. Naira recorded the tournament’s only grand slam. The event serves as an important fundraiser for The Billfish Foundation, supporting billfish conservation in the Caribbean through research, education and advocacy.
