We had Don and his brother Richard out today aboard the Bn'M. Don told me a month ago he wanted to catch a swordfish, but he wanted to use a spinning rod! We talked for a week and he wound up getting a Shimano Saragosa 25000 and loaded it with 750 yards of braid. We rigged it with a 30' leader to make it IGFA legal.
We left this morning and of course it was windy and rainy. The weatherman pulled another fast one on us. It was blowing 15-20 knots and took almost there hours to get out, but we finally made it and the sun came out a little later. As soon as we got out there we caught a few mahi, and a couple were gaffers. It was a steady 3-4' in Gulf Stream and we sent the first sword bait down at 9:45. About 30 minutes later Don hooked up on the spinning rod! The swordfish swam up slow and 20 minutes later the fish was on the surface. A minute later a juvenile swordfish was thrashing around on the surface behind the boat and Charlie grabbed the leader. Don caught his first ever swordfish and it was on a spinning rod in 1600 feet! Charlie took a few wraps on the leader and we had the tag stick ready. The fish was about 30 lbs but unfortunately we pulled the hook out of him before we could get a tag in him as well as Don a pic of his first broadbill. It was a great accomplishment and even better we got on the first drop! We made 5 more drifts throughout the day and had one more swordfish bite. We came tight for a few seconds but never got a good connection on the fish. We headed home at 3:40 and got in as the sun set. We are gonna use the spinning rod again and next time hopefully get Don a keeper for the grill.
