Juvenile black marlin can be encountered in plague proportions at times at the northern end of Fraser Island and can be caught outside Breaksea Spit as well as inside Hervey Bay in water as shallow as 15 feet.

Big striped marlin also call the waters off Fraser Island home with 250lb models not uncommon bycatch when boats are targeting blue marlin in the deeper water.

An average size Fraser blue takes to the air. Although most of the blues encountered off Fraser are in the 300 to 400 pound range just about everyone who fishes for blues off Fraser has stories of 800 pound plus fish.

Mahi mahi are another common bycatch in the clear and nutrient rich waters off Fraser Island.

Small black marlin can be caught just meters from the beach at a spot called Rooneys Point which is on the northwest corner of the island. This area is also the best anchorage when the wind is out of the east.

Occasionally a small black marlin like this little bloke will wander wide and grab a big lure intended for a blue.

A solid blue marlin enters the pattern.

Trolling skirted lures is common practice for boats chasing stripes and blues although ballyhoo and small yellowtail are the bait of choice for the baby blacks.

A juvenile black on the teaser. Small blacks will 'light up' with stripes when excited and are sometimes confused as small striped marlin.

Humpback whales travel to Fraser Island each year to give birth and are a common sight while fishing the area.
